“I never looked at myself as having a disadvantage by being a woman in business,” she says. At the start of her career in 1994, Rankin spent her workdays editing projects with colleagues from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. — and she loved every minute of it. She surrounded herself with talented leaders in the field and, paying close attention to their feedback, found where she fits best in the industry.
“Some of the best feedback I received was often difficult to hear, but I learned to realize that it could help me ‘do better’ the next time and that when people took the time to give me feedback, they actually cared and wanted me to succeed,” Rankin says. “Each day is a time to learn something new, and I have used those daily lessons and my experiences to help clients and the business succeed.”
Rankin’s persistence and hard work led her to the position of General Manager at Awesome Films, a creative video agency founded in 2015 that provides strategic thinking and video stories to engage audiences and enhance brands. Her role includes overseeing the client experience as well as the company’s project strategy and business development.
Rankin’s career includes a variety of highlights ranging from working on teams that have won Emmy Awards to getting a tour of Arnold Palmer’s office from the golf legend himself. But after almost 30 years, it’s the coworkers and clients who have become her friends and mentors that she cherishes the most.
“Simple interactions from so many have made me realize that no matter who we are, being a genuine human being that cares for others is what truly matters,” Rankin says.
What’s Rankin’s advice to other women in business? “Always look for the positives and never let anyone say you can’t do something — and never take any interaction for granted,” she says.
The most important advice she ever received is that “it’s not the situation, it’s how you deal with the situation that makes you who you are.”
“[It] applies to so many aspects of life, career, sports, anything. Take the time to do the right thing, even if it is difficult,” Rankin says.
