Following pushback from right-wingers such as Fox News host Tucker Carlson and political commentator Nick Adams, M&M’s plans to put an
“indefinite pause”
on its so-called spokescandies, the brand announced on Twitter.
The backlash comes after the company began selling packages of M&M’s that
only featured female M&M’s characters
earlier this month.
While people can complain about wokeness all they want, and M&M’s can use this faux controversy to generate attention, this is not the real problem with the company. Instead, Mars Inc. kowtowing to China is a much bigger concern than some cartoon pieces of candy.
Last year, Mars Inc. apologized after calling Taiwan a country in an ad.
“Mars Wrigley respects China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducts its business operations in strict compliance with local Chinese laws and regulations,” Mars said in an August 2022
statement
.
The apology came in response to a Snickers collaboration with the K-Pop band BTS. The
ad
discussing the partnership said Snickers candy bars featuring BTS song names on the labels were sold in three countries: Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, is a small country in the South China Sea. However, China, or the People’s Republic of China, claims that Taiwan is a territory of China, even though Taiwan has been governed separately from China
since 1949
.
While Taiwan stands for many Western values, such as freedom and democracy, China is an authoritarian country with little regard for human rights.
China is engaged in an
active genocide against Uyghur Muslims
in the Xinjiang region of the country. The country has more than 1 million Uyghurs in concentration camps and uses
population control tactics
against them. Some of these measures include forced sterilization and abortion.
Additionally, China is a country with an economy built on exploitation. Many industries depend on
sweatshops, slave labor, and child labor
to maximize profit. China also has a poor environmental record as it continues to build
new coal-fired power plants
.
Genocide and extreme worker exploitation affect millions of people. Meanwhile, anything to do with M&M’s spokescandies has virtually no impact on the world. Therefore, conservatives should shift their attention from the so-called controversy surrounding animated pieces of candy and focus on Mars, and other corporations, appeasing China.
