The leading Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair gets underway Tuesday (September 6) in Hamburg under the motto “Driving the maritime transition”. Around 2,000 exhibitors and more than 40,000 visitors from over 100 countries are expected on its 30th anniversary through September 9. The trade fair features all kinds of keynotes, round-table discussions and special conferences with emphasison the energy transition in the maritime industry, digital transformation and climate change.
Making way for product innovations
Three so-called “Transition Stages” will highlight various themes. The Green Transition Stage in Hall A4 will focus on alternative propulsion systems, environmental technologies and sustainability while the Digital Transition Stage in Hall B6 will highlight automation, digitalisation and data management. The Cruise & Ferry Stage in Hall B5 will feature interior design, outfitting and technologies for cruise ships. “We have consciously reduced some of the exhibition areas in favour of the Transition Stages to give participants more room to present their ideas and product novelties in an open forum,” said Claus-Ulrich Selbach, Business Unit Director at Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC).
Future of industry – conferences on transformation
Five conferences will focus on the future of the industry. Emphasis will be on e.g., alternative propulsion systems at the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (GMEC) on September 7 while the Offshore Dialogue on September 8 will focus on innovations in wind power. The agenda also features the vote for the “Person of the Year” in the “Women in Shipping” panel, and a “Startup Night” during which founders can pitch their business ideas for the Maritime Startup Award. The entire programme can be found on this website.
