Small businesses put survival tactics in place to combat rising costs
Many businesses are still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, while 70 per cent see rising costs as their single biggest challenge in 2022.
As a result, business owners are adopting survival tactics in the next six months to protect their long-term future.

Surveying 1,000+ SMEs
This is the first Simply Business SME Insights Report – an annual study of the UK small business landscape.
To create the report, we spoke to 1,013 of our small business customers in May 2022.
The importance of small businesses can’t be underestimated – they account for 99 per cent of all British businesses and contribute a combined £2 trillion in annual turnover to the UK economy.
We wanted to understand what it’s like to be a small business owner in 2022, from the unique challenges they face to their confidence levels and economic outlook.
An economist’s view
Jonathan Portes is Professor of Economics and Public Policy at King’s College London.
Previously he was Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), the UK’s longest established independent economic research institute, and prior to that Chief Economist at the Cabinet Office.
His current research concentrates on the economic implications of Brexit; and immigration.
