Going vegan is definitely the new trend. More and more people are become conscious about what they eat and the products they use. Muriel, a medical biologist, decided to make it her mission to help people everywhere use skincare products that are completely 100% vegan and plant based. On a mission to change the world and make people more conscious about what they put on their skin, Muriel has founded SIMKHA, a completely 100% vegan and plant based cosmetics line. Her products are all made in house and organic. Strong believer that if you want to help the world, you first need to take care of yourself, Muriel is an inspiration to follow. This week, she took time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions about how it all started.
BWR: What was the inspiration behind your business?
Muriel: What makes us unique is that in every product offered, I want to get my clients to afford a sensory journey and a moment of downtime for themselves. Each product in its composition, is a mixture of ingredients derived from plants and/or flowers. They must recall a situation of “déjà-vu”. In addition, the majority of the recipes of my formulations are derived in part from the inheritance of my mother’s compositions. Added to that, I have a source of inspiration, the essence of SIMKHA beauty, Lorenzo, my son. One of the first formulated moisturizers was for him. I wanted to be able to control what I was using to keep his skin healthy. Behind each of our products is a story, a source of inspiration. None of our ranges, has been put on the market without a story or anecdote.
BWR: Did you always know you would become an entrepreneur?
Muriel: Yes, I think so. I always wanted to do something that wasn’t like the others. Therefore, I was always looking for how to change something, how to do better. But above all, I wanted to my freedom. So after a few years as an employee in the health network, I decided to realize my dream of building a skin care brand.
BWR: What has been the most challenging part of being a business owner?
Muriel: The uncertainty caused by the lack of funding. When there is no guarantee that what we are doing is going to work enough to generate revenue, it makes the situation difficult. At the present moment, it’s important to remember the “why” of our adventure to stay connected to the passion that animates us and pushes us to surpass ourselves. In a nutshell, perseverance!
BWR: What is the main purpose of your business? What are you hoping to accomplish through it?
Muriel: Dedicated to bringing awareness to cruelty-free and environmental responsibility. SIMKHA Beauty is a vegan, organic, and cruelty-free lifestyle skin care brand with a clear vision: to help and inspire each one to have control on what they put on their skin. This why I put a lot of passion and joy behind my business. And by the way, even trough the brand name, there is part of that vision. SIMKHA means “Joy” in Hebrew.
BWR: Who’s been your biggest supporter? Is there someone without who’s support and encouragement you would not have been able to accomplish all your success?
Muriel: Yes. My son Lorenzo. He’s the one that’s at the beginning of everything. He is also the one, that helped me choose the right formula, before the final product for the market. There is also my mum, from whom I hold a good part of the recipes of the formulas of products, which I improve with my scientific background from my training as a biomedical scientist.
BWR: What’s your biggest marketing strategy?
Muriel: Our website, our brand ambassador program and our Instagram. But there is also our client testimony. At the moment, I’m working with a branding specialist to better tailor the products to the demands of my customer niche.
BWR: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What is your main goal?
Muriel: In 10 years, I see our brand becoming a body care home, used and recognized around the world. I see us distributing through major store chains such as SÉPHORA, AVRIL, and a pharmaceutical banner. However, my main goal is to offer products in the form of SPA for Jetset with the products of my brand.
