In business, every conversation you have can be an opportunity to turn that small talk into smart talk. The goal of any entrepreneur is to grow their business successfully. That’s why when they have the chance to promote their business, they will jump on it. But you don’t want to come off too strong where it will be obvious that you’re in “selling” mode. You want to be smart about it. There are so many ways where you can turn any conversation into a smart one. We’ve prepared a list of tips to guide you so next time you’re at a networking event or any event for that matter, you can turn small talk into smart talk!
Work on building professional relationships
When you’re talking to someone, ask them about their business. Where they work. What they do. Who they know. Obviously don’t make it into an inquisition where the person feels like they’re being interviewed. Keep it simple all the while work on getting to know them. Who knows, they might be able to help you in the future. So make that small talk count by getting to really know the person and what they do.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Going back to the previous point, you don’t want to make it sound like you’re interviewing the person. But that doesn’t mean that you should be afraid to ask questions. Ask a question where you know the answer will be long and initiate a conversation. It not only makes the other person seem like you’re interested, but it can also open the door to many opportunities. By actively asking questions and engaging in the conversation, you can exchange ideas, tips and even ressources.
Introduce yourself and your business
Be bold. Go ahead and introduce your business. You’ve worked hard for it and off course you should take the opportunity to talk about your business. But do it in a professional courteous matter. You don’t want to come off strong. Introduce it casually while your conversing. For example, if someone mentions something about a service or product they used or recently discovered, take the opportunity and say “oh by the way, did I tell you about my business?”. And take it from there. Mention the benefits it has on people and how great it’s going. Not only will it spark their interest, but it can also attract potential investors. Who knows? Maybe one of the people you’re talking to knows someone who could help your business.
Talk about the latest trends
There’s always a new trend happening, whether in the business industry or not. So use that to your advantage and talk about it. A simple “Did you hear about…” or “Has anyone tried…” can go a long way when it comes to smart talk. Maybe there’s a new app you’ve been meaning to try that can help in your business but you want to know if anyone has been using it first and get their feedback. Not only can it help you in your business, but it will also show that you’re current and up to date on the latest news.
Don’t be afraid to sound smart
A lot of entrepreneurs often try to downplay it because they don’t want to seem like the “Miss Know it all”. But that can hurt you. Being smart is the new sexy. Why shouldn’t you show that you have brains underneath that pretty exterior? If someone asks a question where no one knows the answer but you do, say it! Show them your brains. Give that answer and let them think “wow she’s really smart”. Obviously don’t come out snotty or make others feel worthless. Show your brains in a smart respectful matter. It can open the door to new opportunities where people will be calling you for your expertise and knowledge. Everyone wants to work with a smart business person, why not let that person be you?
