Some things are better left as a mystery. Like the founder behind Montreal’s #1 Cookies, Kookebox. While the founder wishes to stay anonymous, her cookies definitely are not! In fact, they are so popular that they have been voted as one of Montreal’s best cookies. That’s a pretty big deal from a cookie standpoint. Her identity a mystery, her cookies are fabulous! Read below to see how it all came together!
BWR: What was the inspiration behind Kookebox?
KB: I always knew I wanted to start my own business. But I never knew what that business would be. I had been making chocolate chip cookies for Christmas for family and friends for a couple of years (and bags full of frozen dough balls for my sister while she was pregnant!). One year, I gave some to a friend, a woman I have always admired and looked up to in business. So, when she said “you should sell these “, I created the KOOKEBOX social media page, ordered some boxes and business cards, and the rest is « history » as they say!
BWR: Where do you get your inspiration from?
KB: My stomach? LOL! It mostly comes from my wanting to put all the things I love in a cookie! KitKat is my favorite chocolate bar, I love anything Oreo flavored, and well… Chocolate! The KOOKECAKE though, was me bringing my wedding cake dream to life! It’s crazy sinful but so worth it!
BWR: What is your number one marketing strategy?
KB: Instagram is everything. Although I’m not a huge fan of social media for my own personal use, I can’t deny how much of a game changer it is for businesses. Especially home-based businesses! Not to mention the amazing people it has allowed me to meet. Other than that, word of mouth is a great way to get your name out there. Ask your clients to write reviews and to refer you to their family and friends. It’s free publicity!
BWR: What would you say is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your professional career and how did you overcome it?
KB: The biggest challenge is trying to balance everything: my full-time job, personal life and KOOKEBOX (and sleep).I have a difficult time saying no – to anything and everyone. So, I often find myself making cookie dough at hours where most people are asleep to accommodate clients I should have refused. I’m working on it 😉
BWR: You’ve been named one of Montreal’s best cookies. How does that make you feel?
KB: It’s still surreal to me. I’ve said it before, but I never really expected KOOKEBOX to be where it is today. I thought I’d make a few orders here and there! Never imagined it would grow so big and be where it is today! I am eternally grateful for all the love and support we’ve gotten so far, and I’m SO excited to see what our second year has in store for us (and for you!)
BWR: Do you have any regrets? Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?
KB: No regrets really, other than not starting sooner! I do believe that everything happens for a reason though. So, I’m trusting the timing.
BWR: What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? What are you most proud of?
KB: Being featured on BT Montreal’s Best Cookies in Montreal segment is definitely the coolest accomplishment to date! The article about us in Le Journal de Montreal was a pretty awesome surprise also. Anytime anyone reposts a picture of our cookies or sends us messages about how much they enjoyed them is an accomplishment though, as cheesy as that sounds.
BWR: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What is your main goal?
KB: I’d love to have a little cookie atelier, maybe even a storefront – just moving out of my home kitchen would be great! I’ve got a few ideas, but you’ll all have to stay tuned and see!
