Jessica Gorgui doesn’t do anything halfway! This Ph.D. student who’s spending late nights studying to get her degree managed to find enough time out of her insanely busy schedule to build an enterprise! This genius little lady is the face behind Scrumptious Oils, an organic skincare product. She’s obviously no ordinary boss girl! Make sure to read the interview to see how one smart lady turned an idea into a profitable business!
BWR: What was the inspiration behind Scrumptious Oils?
Jessica: I started eating a super clean paleo-based diet a few years ago. The only thing I had not gotten into was clean beauty. Given that our skin is our biggest organ and that pretty much whatever we put on it, we absorb into our system, I knew I had to make a change ASAP. I’ve always had quite the problematic skin ever since my teen years. So, when I first looked into changing my skincare, I was a little fearful. I started with what I use on my body. I essentially saw a body oil made in Australia that was far too overpriced and expensive to bring here. When I looked for a similar product on the North American market, I didn’t find what I was looking for. So, I created a body oil in my kitchen and scented it with my own perfume!
From there, I got obsessed with how amazing my skin felt. I spent hours on hours researching each individual oil and their benefits/properties. What started off as a DIY session quickly became a business venture. It sparked some serious light bulbs in my brain. After the body oil came the scrub. Then the face elixir and all of the much loved Scrumptious Oils products that are currently available!
That being said, my end goal is to educate skincare users on how to read ingredient lists carefully. I also want to provide them with a green and clean skincare line they can use without the worry harmful products/chemicals.
BWR: You’re currently getting your PhD in pharmaceutical sciences. Did you always have a passion in science?
Jessica: For as long as I can remember, I have always been a major nerd with a passion for sciences. When I was 8, my father was hospitalized for several months. I would spend my days asking questions to medical staff, reading medical books, writing down all his medications. That included their name, dose, how many times he had to take it, and what they were doing to him. Little did I know I’d end up studying that for a living. That being said, when I started my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences, I remember saying I would never do a masters. And when I started my masters, I said I would never be crazy enough to do a PhD. Never say never my lovely friends!
BWR: Getting a PhD is no easy task and doesn’t give you much free time. How did you manage to come up with Scrumptious Oils while getting your PhD?
Jessica: #teamnosleep! Just kidding, but not really! Scrumptious Oils is actually a direct product of my lack of sleep/stress in some way! In June of 2017, I was about to write the biggest exam of my academic career: the comprehensive exam. I had been studying for the past 5 months and it got closer, I was getting more and more stressed. I’m also the kind of person that constantly needs a project to work on. So, knowing that the intense exam prep that consumed my life was about to end, I was looking for an immediate distraction post-exam.
I had so much confidence that the product I had been working on would turn out amazing, that I told my friend I was going to start a business after my exam was over. I would be selling natural/organic body oils in pouches, and the name would be Scrumptious Oils .. a few months later, I was launching this line of skincare!
The most important thing is to have the ability to plan like a pro. My scheduling and planning are what help me achieve my goals on a daily basis! Both of these ventures, whether it’s the PhD or building a business require time, commitment and consistency. It’s also knowing you will have to make sacrifices along the way! Once clear goals are put in place, you work backwards from there and block off time to do a little every day/every week to get you there. Scheduling and planning down to the minute is what keeps me focused and organized.
BWR: What would you say is the most challenging part of your day?
Jessica: I don’t even know how to answer that, all of it is! I think it’s mostly fitting everything into the day! From working on the PhD, to coming home and working on Scrumptious, whether that means planning content or fulfilling orders, and of course making sure that all the admin in the background of the Scouts group runs as smoothly as it needs to! And in between all of that .. you have to find time to grow your personal brand, workout, eat well and sleep! It’s a daily struggle, some days things fall through the cracks but that is life!
BWR: You’re also very involved in a Scouts group. What inspired you to become part of the Scouts team?
Jessica: I live and breath Scouts! I’m obsessed! For those who don’t know what Scouts are – it’s a global volunteer-based program for the youth where we establish weekly meetings and camps for children aged 7 to 17. The mission of the movement is to provide education through the varied methodologies based on the age group. Our goal as teams of leaders is to help build a better world where these children will grow up to be individuals that are grounded, self-fulfilled and that play a productive role in our society.
Back in 2011 at our church, we had a huge surge of immigrants come in and with these families came many children. I quickly realized then that these kids were going to need a community. So, I was very excited to get involved when a friend decided to build a new group. This group is my pride and joy. Seeing our young kids shape up to become amazing leaders themselves is absolutely priceless!
BWR: You’ve had many accomplishments throughout the years with your education, your business and off course the Scouts. What would you say is your biggest accomplishment? What are you most proud of?
Jessica: It’s definitely a tough one to answer. But, i’m going to have to go with something that is Scouts related here! Two summers ago at camp, I was a leader to our big kids (12-17). I decided that I wanted them to learn about the laws of attraction, goal setting, and making a vision board to achieve their goals. So, in the middle of the woods, I walked them through my vision board for the next 6 months. When we got back into the city, almost 20 of the 30 kids had created a vision board for themselves. This is something we talk about to this day. Being able to have such a positive direct impact on these kids through action is my most valued accomplishment.
BWR: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What is your main goal?
Jessica: If my path has taught me anything, it’s that life is FULL of surprises. You really never know what you can come up with. I said I would never opt for an academic career, be in scouts or own a business. But, here we are writing this blog post about all of these things! Ultimately, I know I want to be teaching in University, growing Scrumptious Oils into its’ full potential, and just be able to inspire those around me to go after their dreams! We all deserve a life fueled with passion and purpose .. and i’d love to help people get there in some shape or form!
