Read about the Indian businesswomen whose works have made them the leaders in the
fashion industry.

Fashion is a crucial aspect of our lifestyle. Whether in India or abroad, people take notice of what they wear or what the other person is wearing. From glamorous and embellished outfits to everyday casuals, the fashion industry governs our personality and how we portray ourselves to the world.

It is also one of the industries that have made space for female entrepreneurs to flourish and showcase their talent to the world. Here is a list of six leading businesswomen who have set their mark on the fashion industry and are currently leading it.

Richa Kar

After completing her engineering from BITS Pilani in 2002, Richa started her career in the retail market. She even briefly worked with Victoria’s Secret and realised that there were very few brands in India providing quality lingerie to women who otherwise felt shy to purchase it.

She co-founded Zivame, which is now a huge name when it comes to buying lingerie, shapewear and leisure sets. She used her savings and borrowed money from friends to invest in this business and bring it to where it stands today.

Anita Dongre

Popular for her aesthetic styles, Anita Dongre is a sought-after name in the industry when it comes to donning Indian ethnic or Indo-Western outfits. She works closely with rural women and artisans, provides them with training and helps them earn a livelihood.

From Janhvi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit to Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, Dongre is one of the most renowned fashion entrepreneurs in the country. Her recent pieces include handwoven lehengas from Benaras.

Anamika Khanna

Anamika Khanna’s regal outfits are a blend of modern and traditional outfits. She started her label in the 90s, and since then, she has styled almost every known Bollywood actor.

Her prestigious collection has been showcased in the Wills Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Lakme Fashion Week and Bridal Asia. She tops the list when it comes to hunting for fashion entrepreneurs in India.

Falguni Nayar

Falguni Nayar is the founder and CEO of Nykaa, and under that umbrella, she also runs Nykaa Fashion which lists all kinds of outfits from renowned brands like Only, Levis, Vero Moda, AND, etc.

In 2019, Forbes Asia titled her Asia’s Power Business Woman, and the same year, she earned the award for Business Person of the year by Vogue India. Nykaa alone has 2500+ cosmetics brands selling high-quality skin care products.
