Hannah Hicks saved her best for last.
The Jamestown Community College sophomore scored eight of her 10 points during a 14-1 run in the fourth quarter to lift the Jayhawks to a 60-52 NJCAA victory over Wayne County CC in the Jayhawk Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.
The win, which came 24 hours after losing by two to the CC of Baltimore County Catonsville, was welcome relief to Dave Turnbull, who was coaching with a heavy heart after the death of his mother last week.
“It’s been a tough month or so for my family, and the team was critical to my own mental health,” said Turnbull, whose mother’s funeral was Saturday. “The girls are outstanding. A large group came to my other’s Mass. It meant a lot.”
The Jayhawks, who are now 4-6 on the season, never could find traction offensively yesterday until late against the winless Wildcats (0-6). Eighteen first-half turnovers contributed to that.
But then the hosts seem to flip a switch.
Trailing 51-46 with a shade under eight minutes remaining in the final period, Jamestown CC began to take care of the ball and Hicks began to take care of business. And by the time she was done — coupled with a big assist from teammate Zalika Stevens — the Jayhawks blitzed Wayne County CC the rest of the way.
Hicks, last year’s Region 3 Player of the Year and a NJCAA Third-Team All-American, scored on back-to-back putbacks, fed Stevens for another basket and then scored again from the low block. Stevens followed with another hoop, assisted by D’Auzhanay Harden; Hicks made a nifty jump hook; and then Stevens drilled a jumper. Fittingly, Hicks grabbed a rebound off a Wayne County CC miss in the closing seconds and the Jayhawks dribbled out the clock.
“I’ve got to do a better job of making sure she gets touches where she likes to get the ball,” Turnbull said of Hicks. “That’s on me. We did a better job of that in the fourth quarter. We’ve got to take advantage of that going foward if we’re going anywhere. … It’s something we recognize and we’re working on, and I think it’s coming.”
Hicks finished the afternoon with 10 points, 21 rebounds and eight blocked shots; Grace Lundmark was just as dominant, scoring 17 points, hauling in 16 rebounds and collecting seven steals; and Stevens added 14 points.
The first half wasn’t as pretty for Jamestown CC. In fact, Turnbull sat four of his starters for much of the first two quarters as the turnovers mounted. But Lundmark, the fifth starter, played all 20 minutes and finished the first half with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
“I’ll tell you what,” Turnbull said, “Grace has kept us afloat all throughout the season. She’s done an extraordinary job for a freshman. I had an opportunity to see her play a lot in high school and I really liked her game and she’s certainly not disappointed. She’s probably exceeded my expectations, quite honestly.”
The Jayhawks headed to the break trailing 29-27 and still faced a 49-46 deficit after three periods, but in the final 10 minutes, they finally put it together and finished strong.
NOTES: The Jayhawks’ Anna Jones and Lauren Alfa were shaken up in the first half and didn’t return. … Monica Williams led Wayne County CC with 18 points and Jada Parker added 12. … Jamestown CC will be back in action Wednesday when it entertains Niagara County CC. Opening tip is at 5:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
Nina Kok had a good look at a 3-pointer, but the shot didn’t fall at the buzzer and Jamestown Community College fell to CC of Baltimore County Catonsville 66-64 in the Jayhawk Classic on Saturday evening.
But that missed trey wasn’t the reason Jamestown CC lost.
Turnovers were.
The Jayhawks turned the ball over 36 times, which led to 38 points and the Cardinals escaped with the victory at the Physical Education Complex.
Ahna Thomas poured in 36 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added seven steals to lead the winners, spoiling a fine second-half effort by Jamestown CC’s Zalika Stevens.
The 5-foot 7 sophomore scored 11 points during a three-minute span of the third and fourth quarters, helping the Jayhawks build a five-point lead. But their inability to take care of the ball the rest of the way came back to haunt them.
Stevens led Jamestown CC with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and six rebounds; Grace Lundmark added 15 points and four boards; Kok drilled a pair of treys and Lauren Alfa added one; and Hannah Hicks grabbed 17 rebounds.
The game was close throughout — CCBC Catonsville (4-2) led 35-34 at halftime — but Thomas poured in 11 points in the final period, including the go-ahead hoop with 23 seconds left that put the Cardinals ahead to stay.
The Jayhawks did have one final opportunity to tie or win the game, however. Inbounding the ball with 3.9 seconds remaining, Kok passed to Hicks who tossed it back to Kok, who was open on the wing, but her shot bounced off the rim as time expired.
