H-E-B makes Forbes list of best employers by state

H-E-B, the Texas grocery store you show off to friend’s and family visiting from out-of-state, received another accolade on Wednesday, August 24, this time for ranking among the best company’s to work for in the Lone Star State. The rankings, released by Forbes for every state and the District of Columbia, placed H-E-B at No. 9 among Texas employers.

The total list includes 1,382 organizations and some are included across state lines, with the U.S. Department of State making the grade in 31 states, Forbes says. National grocery and retail chain Target, based in Minnesota, charted in 29 states, as did Home Depot. While H-E-B is expanding its territory, it has a ways to go before it’ll reach anywhere close to that level of market saturation.

Forbes also publishes a separate annual ranking of the nation’s best employers ranked nationally, H-E-B was last on the list in 2019 at No. 132, but “this list aims to capture differences in how companies act and are perceived in various parts of the country.” This state level list’s rankings have also been measured with an updated methodology.

“While many of the hallmarks of a top employer are universal—such as fair pay, safe working conditions, and an inclusive culture—other priorities have emerged in recent years,” a related Forbes article by Yolanda Branch reads. “The Covid-19 pandemic and heightened awareness of racial injustice have shifted expectations of employers.”

Additional questions about remote-work benefits, the wage gap for women, and initiatives around diversity, equity, and inclusion were a part of a survey of some 70,000 Americans working at businesses with 500 or more employees. Other subjects included safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement, and openness to telecommuting, Branch writes.

“The number of businesses ranked in each state was dependent on two factors—the number of qualifying employers and the size of the state’s workforce—and those with operations in more than one state had the opportunity to be listed multiple times,” she says.

Although H-E-B hasn’t been seen on the vaunted national rankings since 2019, it has bagged a number of other rankings that Forbes produces, such as: World’s Top Female-Friendly Companies, No. 16 in 2021; Best Employers for Veterans, No. 74 in 2021; America’s Largest Private Companies, No. 5 in 2021; America’s Best Large Employers, No. 38 in 2022; Best Employers for Diversity, No. 300 in 2022; Best Employers for New Grads, No. 93 in 2022; Best Employers for Women, No. 134 in 2022; and The Halo 100, No. 19 in 2022, which evaluates the most loved brands by consumers.
