Shark Tank India Season 2 is revealing interesting trends with respect to a shift in India’s entrepreneurial spirit. The show’s judges speaking to ET Now revealed that 40% of business owners pitching their ideas to sharks were women. As much as 89% of deals have gone to business people from non-IIT and non-IIM legacy. Also, so far in the show, Shark Tank India judges have provided funding to business owners in the age group ranging from 18 to 86.

Shark Tank India judges Vineeta Singh, co-founder & CEO of Sugar Cosmetics; Peyush Bansal, co-founder & CEO of Lenskart.com; and Amit Jain, CEO & co-founder of CarDekho Group highlighted other major trends they witnessed during Season 2 of the business reality TV show.

Highlighting an interesting theme, Jain said that he found entrepreneurs, who built businesses under constraints, to be more innovative as compared to those who had the luxury of VC money.

Jain said he heard interesting pitches from “two cohorts” of entrepreneurs: the first set hailed from elite colleges and the other “grass root founders”, who built businesses under constraints from their houses. He found entrepreneurs in the second cohort to be more innovative, as they built businesses under constraints, as compared to those from elite institutions, “who also did a good job” but some were burning a lot of VC money.

Innovation has now reached grassroots levels; people are seeing things around them, seeing problems and coming up with real-world solutions, he added.

Vineeta Singh gave the example of a startup which witnessed the problem of erratic water supply in several parts of India and developed a water tap that whistles every time water is released by the municipality.

“Sitting in metros like Delhi, Mumbai or Jaipur, we did not even have an idea that such a problem exists. All of the entrepreneurs from elite colleges were busy solving problems for consumers like us,” she added.

She further added that 40% of entrepreneurs on the show were women and 89% of deals done on the show so far went to non-IIT, IIM companies. Further, entrepreneurs from 18 years of age to 86 years are being funded.

Shark Tank India is a popular reality television show that provides a platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their business ideas and potentially secure funding from a panel of investors known as “sharks.” The show, which is based on the American series Shark Tank, has gained a lot of popularity among audiences in India and around the world.
